Notes:     Maximianus had unwillingly given up power in 305 AD, when Diocletian urged both senior Augusti to abdicate in favor of an orderly transition of authority to the junior Caesares. In 307 AD, Maximianus came out of retirement, and joined his son Maxentius as co-ruler. This sparked a period of internal warfare among the tetrarchs, but after a number of inconclusive engagements they called Diocletian out of retirement to mediate a settlement. This settlement, held at Carnuntum in November 308 AD, revised the tetrarchy, naming the new Augusti and Caesares, and their respective domains. Maximianus was left no choice but to return to his retirement in Gaul.
